Activities in and around Hermanus:

                    Shark Cage Diving: There are a number of licensed operators offering shark viewing trips, leaving from Kleinbaai.
                                                               Prices vary between operators and the trip costs about R1000 per person. Kleinbaai is about
                                                               45km from Hermanus and the drive leads through Stanford and Gansbaai.

                    Whale Boats:           Two operators are licensed to operate Whale Boats from the Hermanus New Harbour. Whale
                                                              Watching excursions last for about 2 hours and cost R400 - R450 per adult, depending on
                                                              the operator. The Whale boats are not allowed to approach the Whales, but very often the
                                                              very inquisitive Whales approach the boats to within touching distance.
                                                              A number of operators launches from Kleinbaai harbour, offering the viewing of Whales,
                                                              Penguins, Whales and very often Dolphins and Sharks.
                                                              Up to 150 Southern Right Whales have been counted in Walker Bay between July and November.
                                                              The Whales migrate to the warmer waters of the Cape Coast to mate and to give birth and usually
                                                              stay in the bay until the young are strong enough to return to the Antarctic, where the colder
                                                              waters offer more food.

                    Walks:                    Avalon on Sea is situated directly opposite the world famous Cliff Path, stretching some 12 km,
                                                              from the New Harbour on the one end, to Grotto Beach on the other side of Hermanus. In season,
                                                              the Cliff Path offers some of the most breathtaking views of the Whales, breaching, spy-hopping,
                                                              sailing, or blowing as close as 10 meters from the Cliffs.

                                                              On the east side of Hermanus is the Fernkloof Nature Reserve, offering some amazing views over
                                                              Walker Bay. Over 50 km of well maintained hiking trails reveal the Coastal Fynbos with over
                                                              1100 different plant species within the 15 square kilometer reserve. The Nature Reserve is also
                                                              an absolute must for bird watchers, with about 110 recorded bird species.

                         Beaches:                 Visitors to Hermanus have the choice from cosy, rock protected coves, to long expanses of sandy
                                                              beaches, ideal for strolling. Grotto Beach is the longest beach in Hermanus, offering not only a
                                                              very clean environment but also facilities like picnic areas, cloak rooms and a restaurant.
                                                              Onrus Beach on the other hand is the choice of surfers and body boarders.

                         Fishing:                  Rock angling brings fishermen from all over the country to Hermanus. A fishing permit is required
                                                             and obtainable from the local Post Office. Chartered fishing trips can be organised, a number of
                                                             boats owners are quite willing to take visitors on their boats for this special fishing experience.

Fly Fishing: A number of dams in the surrounds of Hermanus are maintained and managed by the Hermanus Fly-
fishing Club and guest members are always welcome.
